Who are the 2023 ODI World Cup favourites?
Bookmakers have anointed hosts India as favourites to win the ICC 2023 ODI World Cup. However, in our view, there are several other teams that could make a strong bid. In this section, we take a closer look at the various contending sides:
We expect the following players to feature in India’s squad for the ODI World Cup. Skipper Rohit Sharma will open the batting with Shubman Gill. The middle-order options will include Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be the main all-rounders, with a backup option in Axar Patel. The bowling choices will include R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar.
We believe that India have all the bases covered. The batting is especially strong. On Indian wickets, rival teams will find it hard to restrict the likes of Sharma, Gill, and Kohli. The lower middle order also has many capable players in the form of Rahul, Iyer and Ishan Kishan.
Pandya and Jadeja are formidable strikers of the ball, while Ashwin, Axar, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar are no rabbits with the bat. Assuming that Shami and Siraj are certainties in the playing eleven, the hosts bat deep, right up to number nine.
On paper, this side is not much different from the one that featured in the 2019 ODI World Cup. However, knowledge of familiar home conditions can make a huge difference to the confidence of players.
India would have wanted their best bowler Bumrah to lead the bowling attack. However, Shami and Siraj have been in good form, as we saw in the recently concluded IPL. Thakur is an excellent choice for the third seamer’s position. As long as the trio stay injury-free, India are unlikely to miss Bumrah. Hardik Pandya, if fit enough to bowl, gives the hosts another useful option.
India’s spinners could give them the winning edge. This will probably be Ashwin’s last World Cup. The champion bowler would want to say goodbye on a winning note. Ashwin has the weapons and experience to perform brilliantly in Indian conditions. Jadeja has always been underrated as a bowler. In our view, he is India’s X factor, with bat and ball alike.
Led by their best batsman Babar Azam, Pakistan have in-form players. These include batsmen such as Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, M Rizwan, Agha Salman and Iftikhar Ahmed. Additionally, Pakistan have back-ups in Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique.
The bowling will be spearheaded by Afridi and Rauf, two of the world’s best fast bowlers across formats. M Wasim and Naseem Shah are the other seamers at Pakistan’s disposal. Googly exponent Shadab Khan will lead the spin attack, with the likes of leg-break bowler Usama Mir and slow left-arm orthodox operator M Nawaz to assist him.
In subcontinental conditions, Pakistan batters are quite strong, as they proved in their recent home series versus New Zealand. Pakistan missed a semi-final spot at the last ODI World Cup by a whisker. We expect them to make amends this time around. Pakistan have come a long way in the last four years, especially after Babar Azam was elevated to the captaincy.
Importantly, Pakistan broke their World Cup jinx against India when they beat their traditional rivals in the 2021 T20 World Cup. In 2022, Pakistan got the better of their subcontinental rivals once again in the Asia Cup.
While the batting appears strong, much could depend on how Pakistan’s lower order performs. Though the likes of Afridi and Rauf can slog in the death overs, the batting effectively ends at number seven. So the batting form of allrounder Shadab Khan could prove crucial to Pakistan’s fortunes.
As always, we can expect the unexpected from Pakistan. However, there’s no denying that on their day Pakistan are world beaters.
England will be led by Jos Buttler. The defending champions have a formidable list of top-order batters to choose from. Most teams would love to have the likes of Bairstow or Brooks. The recent form of Jason Roy and David Malan is great news for the England selectors. On the back of his showing in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Alex Hales could compete for a batting slot in the 15-man squad. England bat deep thanks to the presence of experienced allrounders. They include Moeen Ali, Livingstone, Curran, Willey and Woakes.
The pace bowling selections are certain to include Wood, Stone and Topley. Chris Jordan presents another seam bowling option. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are likely to be the preferred spin bowling options. England also look further afield towards Rehan Ahmed or Liam Dawson.
Thanks to the IPL, many England players are familiar with the playing conditions prevailing in India. England have not impressed in ODIs since winning the last World Cup. However, injury problems have ensured that they have rarely been able to field their best eleven.
Can England make a successful defence of their World Cup title? Not many would bet on it. However, given the quality of their players, few would bet against their qualifying for a semi-final spot. From there, England would only be two wins away.
A New Zealand B squad brought down mighty Pakistan on their home turf in Karachi in May. Many key NZ players were unavailable owing to their IPL commitments. Based on their performances in the Pakistan series, some players merit a place in the squad for World Cup 2023.
We believe that the following batters are certain to be in the squad: Finn Allen, Henry Nichols, and D Conway. Will Young, who performed consistently well in Pakistan, could also make the cut. Glenn Phillips and Tom Latham are likely to be the two wicketkeepers. Latham is expected to lead in the absence of the injured Williamson. Phillips could play as a specialist batter.
NZ have a surfeit of all-rounders. Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell are sure to be selected. Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra have done well in Pakistan, and one of them, if not both, could get into the World Cup squad.
Among the bowlers, Southee and Boult are experienced hands. Lockie Ferguson, who has done well in the IPL in recent years, is a strong contender for a place. Among pacemen, Matt Henry and Henry Shipley did well on the Pakistan tour and could compete for a place. His greater experience could help Ish Sodhi partner Santner in the spin department ahead of Ravindra.
NZ will miss the calming influence of Williamson at the top of the order. However, Devon Conway could more than compensate for Williamson, given his explosive form in the IPL.
The Kiwis bat deep, with Ferguson coming in at not earlier than number nine. However, on the evidence of their tour of India earlier this year, their bowlers could prove less effective on Indian wickets.
NZ have made it to six semi-finals in past World Cups. However, they could find it hard to get past the league stage this year. Knowledgeable punters would still be reluctant to bet against their doing so.
Australia will take comfort from the fact that they beat India in India in the ODI series in March 2023. Many members of the squad that achieved the feat are likely to feature in World Cup 2023.
The top-order batting is formidable, with the likes of Head, Warner, Marsh, Labuschagne and Smith doing duty. In the middle order, Cameroon Green, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis could give Australia a winning edge if they perform to their potential. Another plus for Australia is that Alex Carey has been getting better with every international outing.
Among the bowlers, Adam Zampa’s leg break/ googlies give him the bowling credentials to perform well on Indian wickets. Slow left-armer Ashton Agar could assist Zampa on spin-friendly tracks. Australia could even opt to bring in Nathan Lyon, given the off-spinner’s performance in the recent test series in India.
Maxwell gives the Kangaroos another spin option. Josh Hazelwood, Pat Cummins, Mitchel Starc, Nathan Ellis and Sean Abbott are the pace options at Australia’s disposal. Starc, Abbott and Ellis dismissed the Indian batting lineup for a paltry 81 in Visakhapatnam in March.
Australia had a disappointing outing in the 2019 ODI World Cup. This time around, we expect them to put up a much better show. Confidence is the key to great performance. Australia’s ODI series wins over India in India and in the WTC final could prove crucial. Those performances could give the Aussies the psychological boost needed to perform well against India on the latter’s home turf.
Players to watch out for in the ODI World Cup
In this segment of our guide on how to bet on Cricket World Cup, we take a look at some key players. We believe that the upcoming tournament will be dominated by batters. While several of the usual suspects are likely to feature, we expect some other players to steal the show.
These include Shubman Gill, Fakhar Zaman, Cameron Green, Devon Conway and Jason Roy. All of these batters have run into a purple patch in recent months. If they carry that form into the World Cup, cricket fans are in for an exciting competition.
Shubman Gill is on the fast track to becoming India’s best batter across formats. In his fledgling career, the young opener has scored 1311 runs — including 4 tons — in 24 ODI matches at an average of 65.55. To put things in perspective, at a similar stage in Sachin Tendulkar’s career, the master blaster did not have a single ODI century to his name.
In 2023, Gill has made 624 runs in 9 matches at an average of 78.00, including 3 centuries. Those tons include the highest score of 208 versus New Zealand at Hyderabad in January.
The youngster had a brilliant IPL. Gill scored 851 runs in 16 matches, including a 150-plus strike rate. Those runs included three tons, with a top score of 129. Rival bowlers would be forgiven for spending sleepless nights ahead of WC 2023 at the thought of bowling to Gill.
Pakistan’s opening batter Zaman has garnered 3148 runs at 48.43 from 70 ODI matches. His runs include 10 centuries with a top score of 210 not out that he made against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in July 2018. Zaman needs no introduction to Indian cricket fans who will never forget the opener’s 114 at the Oval in the Champions Trophy final in June 2017.
In 2023, Zaman has made 420 runs in 8 matches at an average of 60.00. Those runs include centuries in three successive innings versus New Zealand, with a highest of 180 not out at Rawalpindi in April.
Cameron Green has become one of the most devastating white ball batsmen of the world. This was reflected in Green’s exploits for MI in IPL 2023. In 15 ODI matches, Australia’s allrounder Green has scored 302 runs at 50.33 with a top score of 89 not out. Green has yet to score a ton.
That lack can be attributed to the fact that he comes to bat not earlier than number seven n a team with a great top order. Green’s highest score of 89 not out came against New Zealand at Cairns in September 2022. Chasing a target of 233 on a tricky wicket, Australia were reduced to 44 for 5 when Green joined Alex Carey at the wicket.
The pair added 158 for the 6th wicket before Carey departed. Green guided Australia past the line with two wickets to spare. His runs came off just 92 balls with 10 fours and a six. His seam bowling will prove an additional asset, especially if Australia decide to go with two or more spinners on Indian wickets.
Like India’s Gill and Australia’s Green, New Zealand opener Conway was one of the success stories of IPL 2023. With 672 runs from 16 games, he made a huge contribution to CSK’s fifth IPL trophy win. In a relatively short period, Conway has established himself as NZ’s best batter across formats. In 18 ODI matches, Conway has made 733 runs at 45.81.
Those runs include three centuries, with a top score of 138. In 2023, Conway scored 308 runs in 6 matches at 50.1. He achieved his highest score versus India in his last innings at Indore in January. Though that knock came in a lost cause, the sheer dominance over the Indian bowlers was evident. The innings that lasted just 100 balls included 12 fours and 8 sixes.
Roy was one of England’s heroes in their successful ODI World Cup campaign in 2019. Ahead of the WC, he had scored 402 runs from 5 innings in 2019. He carried that form into the Cup matches, scoring 54 in his first match versus South Africa. He followed that up with 153 versus Bangladesh in his 3rd game.
His two most important innings of 66 and 60 came against India and New Zealand, respectively. Since that time, Roy has not enjoyed consistent form. However, the England opener appears to have changed the narrative recently. He made a brilliant 132 versus Bangladesh in a spin-friendly wicket at Mirpur in March. Earlier, Roy smashed the South Africa bowlers for 113 at Bloemfontein in January.

Who will win the 2023 ODI World Cup? Our prediction
Predicting an ODI World Cup winner is not the easiest of tasks when betting on the ODI World Cup. Historically, the tournament has had its fair share of upsets. It began in the 1983 edition when underdogs India upset the defending champions West Indies in the final.
Hosts India are justifiably the favourites. However, they have not won any ICC tournament after lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. That said, we believe that things will be different this time around. We expect India to live up to expectations and win their ODI World Cup trophy.
